Chief Executive Officer of German side Bayer Leverkusen Fernando Carro has called the club’s split with Erik Ten Hag as a painful but necessary move.

The club announced the decision to sack the Dutch coach in the wee hours of September 1 in the wake of Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Despite holding a 3-1 lead with a man advantage, Leverkusen ended up throwing away the lead to end up with a draw and miss out on picking up its first win of the 2025-2026 Bundesliga season.

Leverkusen lost 2-1 to TSG Hoffenheim in the first league game of the season and dropping further points led to the former Manchester United manager’s exit.

“A parting of ways at this early stage of the season is painful, but we felt it was necessary.”

“We remain committed to achieving our goals of the season-and to do that, we need the best possible conditions at all levels and across the entire first team. Now it’s a matter of fully implementing and utilizing these conditions again” Leverkusen CEO said.

Ten Hag had immense success at Ajax Amsterdam and won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with Man United.
