Football legend Wayne Rooney has stated that Hugo Ekitike should be starting ahead of Alexander Isak for Liverpool Football Club.

The two signings have had largely contrasting forms since joining the Reds with Ekitike having three goals and an assist in seven league games while Isak has just an assist in four league games at the time of writing.

Rooney made these remarks on his podcast on the BBC after Liverpool lost 2-1 to Manchester United marking the fourth loss in a row for Liverpool in all competitions.

Isak largely underperformed bar a solid shot attempt that was saved by Senne Lammens against Man United while Ekitike performed well after coming off the bench and Rooney believes the French striker should start ahead of Isak.

“I wouldn’t play Isak, he hasn’t looked ready since coming from Newcastle. It’s so difficult when you don’t have a preseason.”

“He might’ve done stuff by himself but he’s paying the price of it. On performances, he doesn’t deserve to be playing ahead of Ekitike” Rooney said.
