President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has described Ghana’s failure to qualify to the 2025 AFCON as heart wrenching. The 2025 AFCON takes place in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.
He said this in an interview with Sporty FM where he added that despite the Black Stars missing out on the AFCON, qualifying to the 2026 FIFA World Cup makes up for the AFCON failure.
Ghana officially booked its place in next year’s tournament thanks to a 1-0 win over Comoros to end its World Cup qualification campaign on top of Group I.
“When we crashed out of the AFCON [qualifiers], it was heart wrenching for all Ghanaians because it was the first time in many decades that Ghana had not gone for the AFCON; Ghana has been a permanent fixture in AFCON.”
“It was quite hurtful but I believe that the boys have made it up with qualifying for the World Cup and so we must take it one step further in the competition itself to make Ghana proud” President Mahama said.
Missing out on this year’s AFCON is the first in 20 years for Ghana.
