Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, Matthew Asada, has expressed his excitement at the prospect of rekindling the historic rivalry between Ghana and the United States at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With just 254 days to the global showpiece, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, set the stage at the U.S. Embassy’s American Spaces event, unveiling the theme: “Bridging the Gap — Fostering Connections Between the United States and Ghana Through Soccer Culture.”

Speaking at the event in Accra, Asada said the possibility of the two nations meeting again on the world stage would not only revive fond football memories but also strengthen cultural and sporting ties between the countries.

“From that match in 2006, 2010, to Brazil thereafter and as I relayed and recounted at the beginning of the presentation, that was my first World Cup. ”

“In 2006 and going to see Ghana and the United States play in Numburg was quite special.

The Black Stars are well on course to book their ticket to the tournament, having gathered 19 points from eight matches in the qualifiers. Key to their campaign was a hard-fought victory over the Central African Republic and an upcoming decisive clash against Comoros on October 12 at the Accra Sports Stadium, which is expected to confirm their qualification.

A potential showdown with the U.S. would reignite a rivalry that has already produced unforgettable World Cup encounters, with Ghana famously defeating the Americans in 2006 and 2010, before suffering defeat to them in 2014.

For many fans and observers, the thought of another Ghana–USA clash in 2026 adds extra spice to what is already set to be the biggest World Cup in history, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
