Liverpool have parted company with set-piece coach Aaron Briggs midway through the 2025/26 season, following continued struggles defending dead-ball situations.

The Reds currently hold the joint-worst set-piece record across Europe’s top five leagues, having conceded 12 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League so far. Their latest lapse came in a 2-1 home win over Wolves, where Liverpool again conceded from a corner.

Citi Sports  understands the club felt immediate intervention was required, leading to a mutual decision for Briggs to leave Anfield. Set-piece responsibilities will now be absorbed by the existing coaching staff.

In contrast, title rivals and top-four contenders such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been far more disciplined, conceding significantly fewer goals from set-piece situations, a factor that has helped them maintain consistency in tight matches.

Across the Premier League this season, clubs with strong set-piece structures ;  including Arsenal and Manchester United  have gained valuable points through corners and free kicks, while sides with defensive lapses in such moments have often paid the price.

Briggs joined Liverpool in July 2024, initially as an individual development coach, before taking charge of set-piece duties under head coach Arne Slot. He was part of the backroom team that helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title last season.

Liverpool will now hope the internal reshuffle brings improvement in an area that has become a growing concern as the season progresses.
