Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa has not been named in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s National Men’s Football Team’s squad that will compete in the 2025 AFCON.

This year’s AFCON takes place in Morocco with DR Congo drawn in Group D with Senegal, Botswana and Benin; the competition commences on December 21.

Wissa’s absence was the biggest talking point in the wake of the announcement of the Leopards’ entourage for the AFCON.

The former Brentford forward’s absence was down to injury; since joining Newcastle for a reported fee of 50 million pounds this offseason, Wissa hasn’t featured for the Tyneside due to a knee injury.

Headlining the 26 man squad for DR Congo is West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe (who is a former Manchester United player) and Noah Sadiki of AFC Sunderland.

Wan-Bissaka recently completed his nationality switch from England to DR Congo and featured prominently in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
