Sunderland claimed bragging rights in the North East derby with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light, extending their unbeaten league run against their rivals to ten matches.

In a contest short on quality but high on intensity, the decisive moment arrived early in the second half in bizarre fashion, as Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade headed into his own net to gift Sunderland all three points.

The first half produced little in terms of clear-cut chances, with both sides cancelling each other out in a scrappy, physical affair.

Sunderland came closest before the break when defender Dan Ballard headed narrowly over, while Newcastle’s attack struggled to spark, with Anthony Gordon, Elanga and Woltemade largely anonymous.

The breakthrough came just after the restart. A cross from the right was poorly dealt with inside the Newcastle box, and under no pressure, Woltemade inexplicably attempted to head the ball clear, only to send a looping effort off the crossbar and into his own net, sending the Stadium of Light into raptures.

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, introducing fresh legs from the bench, but Sunderland defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Roefs and his backline standing firm amid late pressure and a flurry of set pieces.

Tempers flared in stoppage time as a series of fouls and bookings disrupted Newcastle’s rhythm, further frustrating Eddie Howe’s side, who looked devoid of ideas in attack.

While far from a classic, Sunderland will not care as the win strengthens their grip on derby dominance and continues an impressive home run, much to the delight of their supporters.

For Newcastle, it was a painful afternoon summed up by a costly error, as they left Wearside empty-handed after a performance that lacked composure and cutting edge.
