Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has issued a very emotional statement expressing his profound regret regarding the incidents that took place in the 2025 AFCON Final.
The Teranga Lions beat Morocco 1-0 to win the 2025 AFCON marking Senegal’s second continental trophy triumph but the game was marred by the controversial incidents that took place.
While protesting their displeasure over a penalty that was awarded to Morocco late in the game mere minutes after Senegal had a goal disallowed, Pape Thiaw instructed his players to boycott the game.
Senegal’s veteran winger Sadio Mane managed to convince the players back on the pitch to see out the game. Brahim Diaz had his penalty kick attempt saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy prior to Pape Gueye’s goal in extra time.
For his role in the near boycott, Thiaw is staring at receiving a stern punishment from Africa’s football governing body CAF but on his part, Thiaw says he never intended to go against the principles of football.

“We had an outstanding tournament with a great organization, which unfortunately came to a dramatic end. It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game I love so much. I was just trying to protect my players from injustice.”

“What some will perceive as a rule violation is nothing but an emotional reaction to the bias of the situation. After consultation, we decided to restart the match and go win this trophy for you. I apologize if I may have offended some people” Pape Thiaw wrote on his Instagram page.
