The leadership of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has met with the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to present a comprehensive four-year strategic plan (2025–2029) aimed at achieving sustainable sporting success for Ghana.
The meeting served as both a policy briefing and a progress update on preparations for upcoming international assignments, including the Youth Olympic Games, the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and the African Games scheduled for 2027.
GOC President Richard Akpokavie emphasised a shift in Ghana’s sporting philosophy, noting that the country has for too long focused on the “event” rather than the “process,” hence the need for early engagement and advanced preparations.
“This plan is our promise to the nation. We are moving beyond wishful thinking and laying a foundation for excellence that will endure,” he said while presenting the document to the Minister.
The strategy outlines a data-driven approach to athlete development to ensure consistent and professional training cycles across sporting disciplines.
Chefs de Mission for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Dakar Youth Olympics, Ernest Danso and Evans Yeboah, also briefed the Minister on preparations relating to Team Ghana, logistics, and fundraising initiatives.
The Sports Minister stressed that Ghana must prioritise long-term investment in preparation instead of the usual last-minute funding rush associated with major competitions.
He further reiterated that sports should not be viewed merely as a leisure activity but as a significant economic driver for athletes, coaches, administrators, and the broader sports industry, particularly at a time when technological advancements such as artificial intelligence are reshaping employment opportunities.
To ensure sustainable financing for sports, the Minister disclosed that the recently introduced Ghana Sports Fund would help address funding challenges.
“We have engaged the National Lottery Authority leadership, and very soon the sports fund will be boosted by a dedicated lottery system designed specifically to support sports infrastructure and athlete welfare. This initiative is slated for implementation soon to reduce the burden on the national treasury,” he explained.
On the upcoming competitions, Kofi Adams assured Team Ghana of government’s full support while urging the GOC to maintain transparency and collaboration with all major stakeholders.
“The GOC must roll out a nationwide campaign to drum up public support and corporate sponsorship,” he advised.
The Minister also reaffirmed government’s commitment to ethical governance, emphasising that every cedi raised for sports must be directed toward athlete development and infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Chief Director of the Ministry, Wilhelmina Asamoah, GOC President Richard Akpokavie, Chefs de Mission Ernest Danso and Evans Yeboah, as well as Charles Osei Asibey.
