The Ghana Olympic Committee’s Communications Director, Charles Osei Asibey, has dismissed reports suggesting that three Ghanaian athletes have gone missing following the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Speculation emerged on social media after claims that three members of Team Ghana had failed to return home with the rest of the contingent after the Games concluded on Sunday, August 2.
However, Osei Asibey said there is no basis to declare any athlete missing, stressing that Team Ghana’s return to Ghana is being carried out in phases.
“All the athletes have valid visas till 16th August, so it may be good to wait till then to declare somebody missing. Our team is scheduled to travel back to Ghana in batches. The last group is expected in Ghana on August 10. Most of them have arrived in Ghana. Until that period, we cannot confirm that someone is missing.”
According to the GOC spokesperson, several athletes and officials have already returned to Ghana, while others remain in the United Kingdom as part of the staggered travel arrangements approved for the delegation.
He added that all members of the team hold valid UK visas until August 16, making it premature to conclude that any athlete has absconded or is unaccounted for.
Ghana concluded the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with two medals, a silver won by para athlete Zinabu Issah in the women’s F57 shot put and a bronze secured by Bantamweight boxer Amadu Mohammed in the men’s 55kg division.
The GOC has urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information until the final group of Team Ghana members returns to the country on August 10.
