Multiple games in the Mexican top flight were suspended in the wake of violent attacks in several Mexican states after the killing of kingpin drug cartel.

The Mexican army wounded Ruben Oseguera Cervantes popularly known as El Mencho in a raid who later died from his wound while being flown to Mexico City.

El Mencho was wounded in Tapalpa in the Mexican state of Jalisco which is a two hour drive from the state capital Guadelajara which is a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city.

After El Mencho’s death was confirmed, reported members of the Jalisco Nueva Geracion Cartel torched cars and buildings and blocked several roads in the country.

Two games in the second division were postponed as a result while Queretaro’s game against Juarez FC in the Mexican men’s top flight and Chivas v America FC in the Mexican women’s top flight suffered the same fate.

Guadelajara will host four games in the 2026 World Cup later in June with the latest incident raising serious concerns over the security in Mexico.
