GES Central suspends all zonal inter‑school sports after violent clashes

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has ordered an immediate suspension of all zonal inter‑school sporting activities for Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools across the region.

A directive signed by the Regional Director, seen by Citi Sports, instructs heads of schools to stop any planned or scheduled competitions until further notice, following troubling reports of violent incidents at recent athletics events.

According to regional authorities, credible reports and widely circulated footage showed clashes that seriously threatened the safety of students, staff and spectators. The regional office says the disturbances undermined the intended spirit of school sports: discipline, teamwork, healthy rivalry and mutual respect.

What the directive says
* Immediate halt to all zonal athletics competitions in the Central Region.
* Schools must inform students, staff and relevant stakeholders and ensure strict compliance.
* Suspension remains until management completes a thorough review, consults stakeholders, and puts in place measures to prevent future violence.

Regional officials stress that the pause is temporary but necessary to safeguard lives and preserve the integrity of school sports. They also promise to restore activities once adequate safety measures are ready.

The move follows an incident at the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru on 19 February, which is under investigation by the Ghana Police Service. Reports say a student was attacked during clashes between schools, with footage circulating widely and prompting a police response.
