After 15 impactful years at the helm, renowned Ghanaian international sports journalist and sports administrator, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has officially stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of Books and Boots.

It is understood that the decision follows his appointment as Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) by President Mahatma (NSA) in March 2025.

Ampofo Ankrah’s current national leadership role in a very demanding sports ecosystem, is one that would require full attention and strategic focus.

The former BBC Fast Track host, founded Street Soccer Africa in 2007, which later became Books and Boots just before the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Under his stewardship, the NGO evolved from a monthly grassroots communities soccer activation tour into a transformative force in recreational and juvenile sports development.

A key pillar of Books and Boots is seamlessly integrating education and sport through young aspiring coaches and highly talented footballers as twin enablers of youth empowerment.

Over the years, the initiative has forged strategic partnerships with respected institutions such as Right to Dream Academy, Active Minds Reading Club, the Otumfuo Education Foundation, and Nestle brand Milo; all in support of its mission to uplift under served communities through learning and play.

Easily the most celebrated milestone in the organisation’s journey was the discovery of football star Mohammed Kudus, who first gained attention at a Books and Boots event in Nina at the age of 9.

Today, the name Kudus stands tall as a powerful testament to the initiative’s impact in identifying talent and creating life-changing opportunities through its distinctive “read books before you wear boots” philosophy.

The incoming Chief Executive Officer, who is expected to be announced in the coming days, will be tasked with building on this strong legacy and steering the organisation into its next phase with renewed energy and direction.

As Yaw Ampofo Ankrah transitions to his new role at the NSA, many will be watching closely to see how Books and Boots continues its inspiring mission under new leadership and direction. Source : Kwame Larweh
