Cricket: Ghana seals T20 World Cup qualification spot

Ghana has secured qualification to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Regional Final in 2027, capping off an impressive unbeaten run at the Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier B in Accra.

The Ghana national Cricket team confirmed their place alongside Tanzania after persistent rainfall washed out all the match-day 5 fixtures at the Achimota Cricket Ovals. Ghana’s final group game against Tanzania was among three matches abandoned without a ball bowled, with points shared.

While the weather denied a decisive finale, Ghana’s earlier performances had already done enough. The team finished with four wins and one no result, collecting nine points and placing second on the table behind Tanzania on net run rate.

It marks a significant step forward for Ghanaian cricket, with the team showing consistency across the tournament to remain unbeaten against five other competing nations.

President of the Ghana Cricket Association, Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare, described the qualification as a proud moment for the country and a reflection of the sport’s growing stature.

“Hosting the tournament has been an honour, and we are incredibly proud of the team’s qualification. The support and energy throughout the week show that cricket is gaining strong ground in Ghana,” he said.

Playing on home soil, Ghana combined disciplined bowling with steady batting performances to maintain momentum throughout the competition, positioning themselves as serious contenders heading into the next phase.

Although Tanzania topped the group, Ghana’s unbeaten record underlines their progress and potential as they prepare for the Regional Final, where a place at the global tournament will be at stake.

For Ghana, the job is far from done, but qualification from the sub-regional stage signals a team on the rise and ready for a bigger challenge.
