The Germany national football team left it late to secure a 2-1 victory over the Ghana national football team in an entertaining international friendly at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart, with Deniz Undav emerging as the match-winner in the closing stages.

For Ghana, it was a night of mixed emotions marked by resilience, improvement, and ultimately, heartbreak.

Germany Take Control Through Havertz Penalty

The first half saw Germany gradually assert dominance, controlling possession and probing Ghana’s defensive shape. Midfield orchestrator Joshua Kimmich dictated the tempo, while Florian Wirtz and Serge Gnabry looked to unlock the Ghanaian backline.

The breakthrough arrived just before halftime under controversial circumstances.

A VAR review ruled that Jonas Adjetey handled the ball in the penalty area, gifting Germany a crucial opportunity. Kai Havertz stepped up and calmly slotted home, sending Benjamin Asare the wrong way to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Fatawu Sparks Ghana Fightback

Trailing at the break, Ghana returned with renewed purpose in the second half. Coach Otto Addo made key tactical adjustments, injecting energy into his side.

The turning point came in the 70th minute.

Substitute Abdul Fatawu Issahaku latched onto a well-delivered ball from Derrick Köhn and finished clinically to restore parity.

At 1-1, Ghana grew in confidence. Thomas Partey imposed himself in midfield, while Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo provided attacking threat.

For a moment, it seemed the Black Stars had turned the tide.

Undav Breaks Ghana Hearts Late On

Just as Ghana looked set to secure a valuable draw, Germany struck decisively.

In the 88th minute, Leroy Sané delivered a clever headed assist into the box, where Deniz Undav reacted quickest to fire home from close range.

The late goal sealed a 2-1 win for Germany and left Ghana with little time to respond.

A final attempt from Antoine Semenyo sailed over the bar in stoppage time, confirming the result.

Encouraging Signs Despite Defeat

Although Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats following the heavy loss to Austria, this performance offered clear positives.

The Black Stars showed improved structure, better transitions, and greater attacking intent. However, lapses in concentration at key moments proved costly; an issue that continues to challenge the team under Otto Addo.

With major competitions on the horizon, Ghana will need to convert promising performances into results.

Germany demonstrated their clinical edge, while Ghana showed signs of recovery and growth. But at the highest level, fine margins decide matches and once again, the Black Stars were left to reflect on what might have been.
