The Ghana Football Association says it will review and strengthen security protocols for clubs’ travel following the fatal armed robbery attack that claimed the life of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong.

Frimpong reportedly lost his life when the team was ambushed along the Goaso–Bibiani road near Ahyiresu in the Ahafo Region, by armed men who reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on the team vehicle. Players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to seek safety.

He suffered critical gunshot wounds to the head and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he unfortunately died.

In a statement, the GFA expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow” over the killing, describing it as not only a devastating loss to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghana football as a whole. The Association paid tribute to the young player, highlighting his promise, dedication, and passion for the game.

Beyond mourning, the GFA confirmed it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities as investigations continue. It has also urged that all necessary steps be taken to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Crucially, the FA signalled a policy response announcing plans to engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions.

The Association further called on the football fraternity to rally around Frimpong’s family and Berekum Chelsea in what it described as an extremely difficult moment, as the sport mourns one of its emerging talents.
