The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked a VIP bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea Football Club, leaving one player dead.

In a statement released by the police, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.

According to the police, the bus was transporting about 30 players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum when it came under attack by six armed men. Three of the attackers were reportedly wielding pump-action guns and opened fire on the vehicle.

In an attempt to escape the assault, the driver lost control, and the bus skidded into a nearby bush.

During the attack, footballer Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Police explain that another passenger, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500 during the incident.

Police investigators retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to assist in ongoing investigations. Crime Scene Management teams and additional personnel have since been deployed to the area as part of efforts to track down the suspects.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command says it has intensified a coordinated operation to arrest those responsible. It has assured the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

Meanwhile, the Police are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
