Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has called for greater investment in youth development to help grow sports across Africa.

Speaking at the Basketball Africa League Investor Summit in Kigali, Kofi Adams said developing young talent through grassroots programmes remains crucial to the future of sports on the continent.

The minister made the remarks during a high-level panel discussion alongside Rwanda’s Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, and Andreas Zagklis.

The Basketball Africa League, owned by the NBA, is currently in its sixth season and continues to expand basketball development and investment opportunities across Africa.

Ghanaian club Spintex Knights have competed in the preliminary stages of the competition in the past two seasons.

“If we want to produce elite athletes, we must build a strong foundation. Ghana has established structures like the Grassroots Sports Secretariat and the School Sports Organization to nurture young talent from an early age.”

“Africa must be recognized as a production line for sports, not just a market for athletes. We need to create opportunities here for our athletes to develop and excel.”
