Ghana’s Evonne Fatimah Britton will take on world record holder Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday, May 13, at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships after both athletes won their respective heats at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Britton progressed to the final after an impressive performance in heat 1, as she looks to challenge for a medal in front of the home crowd.

In January 2026, Evonne Britton stormed to a new African lead in the 60m hurdles. She shattered the Ghana national record after clocking an impressive 7.99 seconds to win the women’s 60m hurdles at the ISTAF Düsseldorf in Germany.

The remarkable performance made Britton the first Ghanaian woman to run under 8 seconds in the event and the eighth African woman in history to achieve the milestone.

Britton, born in the United States, has competed for Ghana since 2024. Her rise in athletics began in 2010 when she won silver in the 400m hurdles at the World U-20 Championships.

Tobi Amusan enters the final as the favourite following years of dominance on the continent and the global stage. The Nigerian star holds the women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds, set at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, and has won multiple African titles in the event.

The final is expected to be one of the standout events of the championship, with spectators anticipating a competitive showdown between Ghana’s leading hurdler and Africa’s fastest woman over the barriers.
