Ivory Coast forward Oumar Diakité has described Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan as one of the most influential figures he admired growing up, insisting the former Black Stars captain’s impact extends far beyond football.

Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history, having captained the Black Stars at multiple major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to EOS Official ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the AFCON-winning attacker said he has always admired Gyan for both his football talent and commanding personality.

“I love him so much, his personality and his football talent,” Diakité said.

The 22-year-old Cercle Brugge forward explained that Gyan’s aura and leadership qualities are what make him stand out.

“Asamoah Gyan is more than a player,” he said.

“He has an imposing figure that when he arrives somewhere, you know someone important has arrived. He has impact and I love that for him.”

Diakité added that Gyan’s charisma is something that transcends football itself and remains part of the legacy he has built throughout his career.

The Ivorian international also referenced videos of Gyan leading famous “jama” sessions with fans and teammates, describing the former Ghana captain as someone who naturally commands attention wherever he goes.

According to Diakité, true greatness is not only about goals and trophies but also about the legacy and personality a player leaves behind.

“To leave a legacy, you need power and personality. All these qualities Gyan possesses,” he noted.

Diakité concluded by expressing his desire to one day meet his childhood idol in person.
