CRUEL END! Croatia break Black Stars’ hearts, but Ghana march into Round of 32

Ghana’s passage into the knockout stages was secured despite a bitter 2-1 defeat to Croatia in a tense, frustrating and often directionless encounter that finally burst into life late on before ending in heartbreak for the Black Stars.

For long spells, this felt less like a World Cup showdown and more like a tactical stalemate nobody truly wanted to win. And when the decisive moment arrived, it was Croatia who showed the sharper edge—leaving Ghana to reflect on a performance that raised more questions than answers.

Croatia took control of the contest in the 31st minute through Petar Sučić, who was afforded far too much time 25 yards from goal. With Ghana’s midfield passive and slow to close down, the midfielder calmly picked his spot and drilled a precise effort into the bottom corner, giving the Croatian side a deserved lead.

At that point, the pattern of the match was already clear. Croatia dictated possession, Ghana sat deep, and the Black Stars offered little ambition going forward. It was a passive approach that frustrated observers and, at times, even their own attacking players.

The second half, however, brought a flicker of resistance.

Ghana introduced more urgency after the restart, with Abdul Fatawu injecting pace and directness down the right flank. Suddenly there was at least intent, and within minutes Ghana came closer; Fatawu himself bending a dipping effort just over the bar as Croatia briefly lost control of midfield.

The game swung dramatically in the 73rd minute when Ghana thought they had equalised. From a set-piece into the box, Derrick Luckassen reacted quickest to stab the ball home. For a brief, euphoric moment, Ghana celebrated wildly only for the flag to cut short the joy.

But VAR intervened. After a lengthy delay and a nervous wait, the goal was eventually awarded. Ghana were level, and for the first time in the match, belief surged through the Black Stars.

Momentum shifted. Croatia suddenly looked rattled, and Ghana pushed forward in search of a second. For a spell, it felt like the game had tilted completely.

Yet football, as ever, can be ruthless.

With 83 minutes gone, Croatia responded in the most brutal fashion. Luka Modrić, still pulling strings deep into the final stages, delivered a pinpoint corner into the area. Nikola Vlašić rose highest, meeting the delivery cleanly and steering a header beyond the Ghana goalkeeper.

2-1 Croatia.

It was a hammer blow from which Ghana never truly recovered.

The final minutes became a exercise in frustration for the Black Stars, as Croatia managed the game with experience and calm, slowing the tempo and breaking up any rhythm Ghana tried to build. Even with added changes and a late push, clear chances never arrived.

Croatia saw out the closing stages with cold efficiency, while Ghana’s early reluctance to attack ultimately came back to haunt them.

Despite the defeat, Ghana’s progression to the Round of 32 was confirmed thanks to results elsewhere, but there was little celebration at full-time. Instead, a sense of what might have been lingered heavily.

This was a match defined by hesitation for large parts, briefly sparked into life by Ghana’s equaliser, only to be decided by Croatia’s superior ruthlessness in the decisive moment.

For Ghana, the Black Stars move on; but not without scrutiny over a performance that lacked courage for long stretches, and only found urgency when the game was already slipping away as they play the winner of Group L
