Japan produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by leading Brazil for much of their Round of 32 clash, but the five-time champions staged a dramatic late comeback to book their place in the last 16 with a 2-1 victory in Houston.

Kaishu Sano gave Japan a surprise first-half lead after capitalising on a loose pass in midfield before driving through the heart of Brazil’s defence and firing beyond the goalkeeper for his first international goal.

Despite dominating possession throughout the opening half, Brazil struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and went into the break trailing 1-0 after Japan’s disciplined defensive display frustrated the South American giants.

The Selecao emerged from the interval with far greater urgency, introducing teenage sensation Endrick as they searched for a way back into the contest.

Brazil’s pressure finally paid off midway through the second half when Gabriel Magalhães floated a cross into the area and veteran midfielder Casemiro rose highest to power a header beyond Zion Suzuki, levelling the scores at 1-1.

Vinicius Junior came agonisingly close to completing the turnaround moments later after producing a dazzling solo run, nutmegging a defender before seeing his effort tipped onto the post by Suzuki.

Japan held firm as Brazil continued to dominate possession and create chances, forcing the match towards stoppage time and raising the prospect of extra time.

However, just when penalties appeared inevitable, Brazil delivered the decisive blow.

Deep into six minutes of added time, Gabriel Martinelli found space inside the penalty area, controlled a pass with his left foot before shifting it onto his right and calmly finishing into the far corner to spark wild celebrations among the Brazilian players and supporters.

The dramatic winner completed a remarkable comeback, sending Brazil into the Round of 16 after surviving one of the tournament’s biggest scares.

Japan, who had defended heroically for long periods and looked on course for another famous World Cup upset, were left heartbroken after conceding so late in the contest.

Brazil will now continue their quest for a record-extending sixth World Cup title after escaping a spirited Japanese challenge in one of the most dramatic knockout ties of the tournament so far.
