San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson says his team just wasn’t ready to win the 2026 NBA title after falling to the New York Knicks.
Spurs lost 94-90 in San Antonio in Game 5 condemning the team to a 4-1 series loss in the best of seven game series. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama thoroughly struggled in the series and could muster just 19 points in 38 minutes in Game 5’s loss; this was Wembanyama’s third year competing in the NBA and his first competing in the NBA playoffs.
The title is the first for New York Knicks since 1973 while San Antonio search for their first since last winning in 2014. Knicks guard Jalen Brunson scored 45 out of New York’s 94 point tally to win the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.
Despite holding multiple leads including a 29 point lead in Game 4 and a 16 point lead in Game 5, San Antonio blew those leads en route to losses in both games and in his post-game presser, Johnson said,

“We weren’t ready to win an NBA championship. The better team won. We did a lot of good things, and we didn’t finish the job. That’s what it is.”
