Who will reach the Globe Cup knockout stage? Follow the African teams on Matchday 3 of the group stage with AfroPari!

Reading Time: 3 mins read

Africa’s best teams continue their journey at the World Football Forum. Matchday 3 of the group stage is coming up, and it will be decisive. The key matches in each group will take place simultaneously. No backroom deals or foul play – just the players’ skill and a fair contest from the first to the last second. AfroPari brings you a preview of the most anticipated fixtures involving African national teams.

South Africa vs South Korea, 25.06

In a dramatic match against the Czech Republic, Hugo Broos’s side snatched a draw shortly before the final whistle, gaining their first point in the tournament. To stay in contention for a knockout stage spot, South Africa must defeat South Korea, while the Tigers of Asia would be even satisfied with a draw.

South Africa’s greatest strength is their team pace. The Bafana Bafana make excellent use of open space and love to attack down the flanks, where wing-backs Aubrey Modiba and Khuliso Mudau regularly break through. However, South Korea are tough opponents, boasting stars such as Lee Kang-in and Son Heung-min, so in order to win, South Africa will not only have to play their best football but also show true fighting spirit.

Odds: W1 – 5.15, X – 3.76, W2 – 1.68

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia, 27.06

The Blue Sharks’ clash with Spain made headlines around the world and became a symbol of the unbreakable African spirit. Cape Verde held their own against one of the tournament favorites, and goalkeeper Vozinha instantly became a celebrity: in just a few days, the number of his Instagram followers increased from 50,000 to 15,4 million.

On Matchday 2, Cape Verde put in a superb performance against Uruguay and secured a 2-2 draw, earning another vital point. Now, the global forum debutants are one step away from reaching the round of 32. To do so, they need to beat Saudi Arabia, although it’s possible that Africa’s hope will be able to progress from the group even after a draw.

The Blue Sharks are one of the most entertaining teams in the competition. Not only do they know how to get the result they need, but they also love to put on a show. These players are bold in their dribbling, make backheel passes and shoot on goal from any position. In the game against Uruguay, Kevin Pina scored a spectacular goal from a free kick, while Sidny Cabral even attempted to score directly from a corner kick.

Saudi Arabia are a disciplined and resilient side for whom the clash with the Blue Sharks will also be a decisive one. Cape Verde cannot afford to lose their concentration for a single second. The whole continent is cheering for them and hoping to see Bubista’s team in the knockout stage.

Odds: W1 – 2.38, X – 3.44, W2 – 2.92

Egypt vs Iran, 27.06

Following a 1-1 draw with Belgium, the Pharaohs secured their first-ever victory in the Globe Cup. Egypt convincingly defeated New Zealand 3-1 and now have 4 points ahead of Matchday 3. Hossam Hassan’s men are likely to advance to the knockout stage even if they lose to Iran, but the Egyptians are certainly determined to fight for top spot in the group.

The Pharaohs are the clear favorites. Egypt boast a formidable attack, featuring players such as Emam Ashour, Omar Marmoush and the legendary Mohamed Salah. Besides, the African side demonstrate excellent teamwork and defensive solidity.

Iran will surely try to capitalize on counterattacks and exploit the Pharaohs’ mistakes. The Egyptian defenders should pay particular attention to Mehdi Taremi and Mohammad Mohebi, who can always cause danger through their individual actions.

Odds: W1 – 2.44, X – 2.69, W2 – 3.68
