Black Bombers Coach Ofori Asare has said that Ghana’s boxing team is seizing a major opportunity at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing it as a platform not just for the event but for greater international success.
With the Commonwealth Games 2026 boxing competition just days away (23 July – 1 August in Glasgow), Ghana’s national Boxing team has wrapped up intense training at a multi-nation camp, exuding confidence as they aim to upgrade their previous medal tally.
At the 2022 Birmingham Games, Ghana secured two silver medals and one bronze.
This time, the Black Bombers (and Hitters for the women) are targeting gold.
Speaking after the team’s final touches in Belfast, Ireland, where Team Ghana has been preparing for the start of the games, Coach Ofori Asare expressed confidence in his team to deliver some gold medals.
“So it’s a big opportunity for Ghana coming here and to have most of the good boxers, the best boxers in the Commonwealth coming here, not only for the Commonwealth Games, beyond the Commonwealth,” the coach stated during final preparations in Belfast, Ireland.
He added that the squad’s quality could even propel athletes to Olympic level
“It can take you to the Olympic level because you are seeing, the boxers here are the same boxers that will continue campaigning for the Olympics. We’ve trained a lot, and I believe in the preparation of my boxers, having seen some results from their preparation.”
Nancy Bamfo, competing in the W54kg category, also shared her personal drive and readiness.
I’m feeling very good and I’ve trained and I’m well prepared for the tournament.
I’m a soldier, so if participating in this competition is an opening for females and then myself as well, and then I’m standing in for Ghana and I’m standing in for the Armed Forces Ghana. So it means a lot to me,” she said.
“We prepared very well, and this time around, we make sure we make Ghana proud. The last time we won two silver, one bronze but this time around, we’re going to win gold medal. We are confident, we are all comfortable, and we are all ready, all ready to make it to the top.”
