Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has stated that he allocated a sum of GH¢150 million ($12,885,936 at the time of writing) to Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team, the Black Stars, to fund their entire campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. (Scroll down to watch video)

However, the Black Stars spent GH¢58 million ($4,982,561 at the time of writing) of the allocated amount during its campaign in the competition co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show, the Finance Minister stated that the allocated sum was hedged against the Black Stars competing all the way to the final game of the competition.

In the wake of the Black Stars’ exit at the round of 32 stage after suffering a 1-0 loss to Colombia, the expenditure amounted to GH¢58 million.

“I went to Parliament [of Ghana] and allocated 150 million Cedis for the whole campaign assuming that the national team was going to go all the way to the final [but I gave them] 58 [million Cedis]” he said.
