France will be without any relief over Michael Olise’s disciplinary situation after FIFA rejected the French Football Federation’s appeal to overturn the winger’s controversial yellow card ahead of Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco.
Head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed that FIFA had upheld the booking, meaning Olise remains one caution away from suspension.
“There was no change when it comes to Olise’s yellow card. We received FIFA’s decision this morning that the yellow card was maintained,” Deschamps said.
The booking was shown in the 97th minute of France’s narrow 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Paraguay following an altercation with Matías Galarza.
The French federation argued that the caution was harsh, with television replays appearing to show Olise only grabbing Galarza’s shirt before the Paraguayan midfielder fell to the ground.
However, FIFA has opted not to overturn the referee’s decision, leaving France with a selection concern heading into the knockout clash.

Olise will now enter the quarter-final against Morocco carrying a yellow card, meaning another booking would rule him out of a potential semi-final should Les Bleus progress.
Despite the setback, France remain among the favourites to lift the trophy after an impressive campaign.
Deschamps’ side cruised through a difficult group containing Senegal, Morocco and Norway, winning all three matches before thrashing Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32.
Their victory over Paraguay was less convincing, however, requiring a late breakthrough to secure a place in the last eight and raising questions over whether cracks are beginning to emerge.
France will once again look to captain Kylian Mbappé, who has been one of the standout performers at the tournament.

The Real Madrid forward has scored seven goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking his overall tally to 19 goals in 19 World Cup appearances, as he continues his pursuit of the competition’s all-time scoring record.
Les Bleus face Morocco on Thursday with a place in the semi-finals at stake, but Olise will have to tread carefully knowing another booking would end his involvement if France advance.
