Ghana has won its first African table tennis gold medal in 39 years after Israel Aklie and Joanita Borteye claimed the U15 mixed doubles title at the African Youth Table Tennis Championships at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
The Ghanaian duo defeated Tunisia’s Amori Amine and Ela Saidi in the final to secure the country’s first gold medal at a major African table tennis championship since 1987.
Aklie and Borteye impressed throughout the tournament with a series of composed performances before overcoming the Tunisian duo to lift the continental title.
Their victory is Ghana’s first gold at a major African table tennis championship since Patricia Offei and Patience Opokuah won the women’s doubles title at the 1987 All-Africa Games in Nairobi, Kenya.
The triumph ends a nearly four-decade wait for continental gold and marks a major milestone for Ghanaian table tennis.
