French Football Federation President Philippe Diallo has described the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of the France men’s national team as a source of national pride.

Diallo made the remarks after the federation confirmed Zidane’s appointment on Tuesday, July 28.

The former Real Madrid manager succeeds Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after France finished fourth at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Zidane returns to the national team as one of France’s greatest football figures, having helped Les Bleus win the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 as a player, alongside Deschamps.

Speaking after the appointment, Diallo said Zidane’s arrival was a proud moment for French football stating that;

“It marks the meeting of a legend in the history of Les Bleus, who has become one of the most decorated and respected coaches of his generation, and a team with rare potential, driven by the highest ambitions.”
