Roberto Mancini has agreed to return as Italy’s head coach, marking the beginning of a new era for the Azzurri after a turbulent period within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

The appointment comes after plans to hire Andrea Pirlo reportedly collapsed after FIGC president Giovanni Malagò intervened over concerns relating to Pirlo’s commercial collaborations with Russian brands.

Mancini is now set to take charge once again, having previously managed Italy between 2018 and 2023.

Return after administrative upheaval

Mancini’s reappointment follows significant changes within the FIGC leadership.

Technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo both resigned after unsuccessful attempts to appoint high-profile managers, including Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, and Andrea Pirlo.

With those efforts failing, Malagò reportedly opted to bring back the man who delivered Italy’s most recent major international success.

Recent managerial journey

Mancini has experienced an eventful few years since leaving Italy:

  • Italy (2018–2023): Led the Azzurri to UEFA Euro 2020 glory and oversaw a world-record 37-match unbeaten run in international football.
  • Saudi Arabia (2023–2024): Took charge of the Saudi national team before leaving in October 2024.
  • Al Sadd (2025–2026): Guided the Qatari club to the domestic league title before departing.

Distinguished managerial career

Mancini remains one of Europe’s most accomplished coaches, with major honours across club and international football.

Team Major achievement
Italy Won UEFA Euro 2020 and set a 37-match unbeaten record
Manchester City Ended the club’s 36-year trophy drought by winning the 2011 FA Cup and secured the dramatic 2011/12 Premier League title
Inter Milan Won three consecutive Serie A titles between 2005 and 2008

Successful playing career

Before moving into management, Mancini enjoyed an outstanding playing career as a forward. He won the historic 1990/91 Serie A title with Sampdoria and later lifted another league title with Lazio in 1999/2000, establishing himself as one of Italy’s finest players of his generation.

His return is expected to provide continuity and experience as Italy look to rebuild and compete for major honours once again.
