Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has joined Bundesliga side FC Köln on a free transfer after an impressive showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The 27-year-old left-back completed the move after his contract with French club AJ Auxerre expired, becoming FC Köln’s latest signing ahead of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season.
Gideon Mensah confirmed his departure from Auxerre in a farewell message on social media, thanking the club’s players, coaches, staff and supporters for their support during his four years in France.

He described representing the club as “a real honour” and said he was leaving with “a heart filled with gratitude.” The Ghana international has since completed his medical examinations at FC Cologne ahead of the move.

Mensah impressed at the World Cup, playing every minute of Ghana’s four matches as the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 before losing to Colombia.
He was among Ghana’s standout performers throughout the tournament. Against England, he made nine clearances, five tackles and two interceptions, completed 81 percent of his passes and delivered two accurate long balls. His display earned him the highest WhoScored rating of the match, 7.75.

Gideon Mensah also enjoyed a strong 2025/26 season with Auxerre as they fought relegation. He made 30 Ligue 1 appearances and provided two assists.
He joined Auxerre on loan in 2021 before making the move permanent the following year.
A key figure for Ghana in recent years, Gideon Mensah now brings top-flight experience and international pedigree to FC Köln as the club prepares for the new Bundesliga campaign.
