Veteran American player Venus Williams’ latest run in the US Open came to a quick end after the former champion suffered a first round exit.
The 46 year old lost 2-6, 6-7 to fellow American Sofia Kenin in a very late game that was played after Novak Djokovic lost shockingly to Mariano Navone of Argentina. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
Despite improving her output in the second set, Williams committed multiple unforced errors that eventually put Kenin in front.
Speaking after the loss, Williams shared how unhappy she was about playing late in the night in her 96th career Grand Slam appearance.
“It was extremely late. I’ve never played a match that late before…It’s not ideal. I would have preferred something else definitely. It wasn’t great for either of us, so I think we both tried our best.”
“I just don’t know any other sport where you have to start that late. I definitely think there’s room for improvement there” Venus Williams said.
