Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be demolished and replaced with a modern facility that meets FIFA and CAF standards.

The lawmaker made the call after inspecting the condition of the stadium, describing some parts of the facility as “quite shocking” and warning that Ghana needs to act quickly.

Kyere-Duah said he has had a long association with the stadium, dating back to his time as a sports journalist, but acknowledged that the facility’s appearance on match days can mask deeper structural problems.

“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you will see the place being so magnificent.”

However, he said a detailed inspection paints a very different picture.

“But when you take a deep tour, like we’ve done, then you realise you have a very long way to go.”

Calls for urgent replacement

With the upcoming AFCON qualifiers approaching, Kyere-Duah believes Ghana cannot afford to rely on temporary solutions.

He said the focus should be on replacing the stadium entirely rather than concentrating only on short-term repairs.

“So for me, the short, medium term, I’m not thinking about long term. We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down, and build a modern stadium that befits the status of the Ghanaian capital, Accra, to host FIFA, CAF sanctioned matches.”

The MP described the current state of parts of the stadium as “terrible” and urged authorities to move quickly.

“We need to work very, very fast. It’s very, very important.”

His comments add to growing calls for a major overhaul of the Accra Sports Stadium, with concerns over its infrastructure and ability to consistently meet international football requirements.
