Real Madrid have welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon plans to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup following widespread opposition to the proposal.

The Spanish club issued a statement after FIFA, led by President Gianni Infantino, dropped the plan amid criticism from across world football.

Several confederations, including UEFA, opposed the proposal, arguing that football’s flagship competitions should not be opened to private investment. UEFA had also threatened to boycott the World Cup if the plan went ahead.

Reacting to FIFA’s decision, Real Madrid said it welcomed the move, stating;

“Real Madrid values very positively the decision taken by FIFA to abandon the proposal to partially sell the commercial rights of its competitions.”

“Our club considers that it is good news for football, for its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans of our beloved sport.”
