Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o Fils has backed under-fire FIFA President Gianni Infantino to continue as leader of world football’s governing body. He said this in an exclusive interview with CNN.
Infantino had come under serious criticism for leading a proposed move to sell a stake in FIFA to an investment group led by Joshua Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, for a reported fee of $4 billion.
However, the major backlash that included Europe’s football body UEFA threatening to boycott the FIFA World Cup, forced Infantino to cancel the proposed deal.
Many have called on Infantino to resign and stay on as President as he seeks re-election that is slated for March.
However, multiple time AFCON winner, Eto’o believes Infantino did nothing wrong with his plan and the controversy surrounding him is down to politics.
“I don’t think that President Gianni Infantino has done anything wrong.”
“I think the timing of all of that is because there’s an election coming out, when Gianni Infantino is standing. All of this has happened because there’s an election coming out, that’s all there is” Eto’o said.
