Liverpool have rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty with virtually the final kick of the game.
Newcastle looked set to secure all three points after Joe Willock restored their lead in the 57th minute, moments after Cody Gakpo had levelled for Liverpool.
The hosts had taken an early lead through Anthony Elanga, who finished a quick counter-attack in the fifth minute.
Liverpool responded strongly after the break and Gakpo brought the visitors level in the 55th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box.

Newcastle immediately hit back, with substitute Willock firing into the bottom corner just a minute after coming on.
The Magpies defended their advantage deep into stoppage time and appeared on course for victory.
However, Liverpool were handed a lifeline in the sixth minute of added time when Lewis Hall was adjudged to have fouled Víctor Muñoz inside the penalty area.

Szoboszlai stepped up despite intense pressure from the home supporters and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-2.
The Hungarian’s late penalty ensured Liverpool avoided defeat in a dramatic Premier League encounter, while Newcastle were left frustrated after surrendering their lead in the dying seconds.
