Former FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder Marc van Bommel has been appointed head coach of the Belgium national team on a two-year contract.

Van Bommel was confirmed in the role on Friday, August 7, replacing Rudi Garcia, who guided Belgium to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Red Devils were eliminated by Spain following a 2-1 defeat, with Spain going on to beat Argentina 1,0 in the final and lift the World Cup.

Van Bommel previously enjoyed domestic success as head coach of Royal Antwerp, leading the club to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title, the Belgian Cup, and the Belgian Super Cup. The appointment marks Van Bommel’s first senior national team head coaching role, and the former Netherlands international said he is excited to take on the challenge.

“As a coach, being in charge of a national team is one of the best jobs there is. You work with the best players in a country and there aren’t that many really top countries.”

“I am very happy to be here. It is different from coaching a club, but this challenge suits me well” Van Bommel said.
