Manchester United defender Harry Maguire says he hopes Marcus Rashford remains at Old Trafford, insisting the England forward can make the team stronger.

Rashford made his first appearance for United since December 2024 when he came on as a second-half substitute during their 4-2 pre-season defeat by AC Milan in Wroclaw.

The forward showed flashes of his quality, including a skilful moment near the corner flag, and came close to scoring after being handed the number nine shirt.

However, uncertainty remains over Rashford’s future ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.

United have stressed that the number nine shirt is not necessarily permanent, particularly with new striker Benjamin Sesko unavailable through injury.

Manager Michael Carrick has also been unable to confirm whether Rashford will remain at the club, and Maguire admits he is similarly unsure.

But the United captain says the players would welcome Rashford staying.

“As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure.”

Maguire was impressed by Rashford’s impact against Milan and believes his pace and attacking ability remain valuable to United.

“You saw when he came on, he threatened the backline really well. He could have scored. He’s a huge threat.”

Having played alongside Rashford for several years, Maguire also believes the forward’s presence in training would benefit the squad.

“I’ve played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him and playing with him in training is going to help us.”

With the transfer window still open, Rashford’s future remains unresolved. But Maguire’s comments underline the belief within the United dressing room that the 28-year-old can still play an important role in improving the team if he stays at Old Trafford.
