“We will not present the same team for AFCON next year” — Maxwell Konadu

Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has confirmed that Ghana will make significant changes to the squad ahead of the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after their disappointing WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign.

Ghana entered the tournament with a 38-man provisional squad, including Black Starlets talents such as captain Joseph Narbi and U-17 AFCON standout Eric Gyamfi. The squad was later reduced to 23 players for the competition.

The Black Satellites exited the tournament at the group stage after a goalless draw with Togo in their final Group B match.

The result left Ghana third in the group with two points from three games, following a 4-2 defeat to Nigeria and a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso.

Speaking after the elimination, Konadu admitted the team fell short of expectations but said preparations for next year’s U-20 AFCON would involve changes.

“We came here to win, but it didn’t work out. We will reorganise ourselves. Definitely, we will not present the same team for the AFCON next year.”

The coach said the WAFU B Championship allowed the technical team to assess mainly home-based players and identify those capable of making the step up.

“For this tournament, we maintained the home-based boys because we wanted to see what they could offer. Some of them have shown that, given the opportunity, they can really excel.”

Although Ghana failed to advance beyond the group stage, Konadu believes the competition provided valuable lessons as the team prepares to host the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where they have already secured automatic qualification.
