Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 in a fiery derby at the Metropolitano on Sunday to move above their city rivals into second place in La Liga.
Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David scored within six minutes of each other after half-time to put Atlético in control, before Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back late on to set up a tense finish.
The result lifts Atlético to 16 points from seven matches, one point ahead of Real Madrid, while Barcelona remain top of the table on 12 points according to the updated standings provided in the live coverage.
The derby was goalless at half-time, with neither side able to establish a clear advantage. Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced into a save from Kang-In Lee, while Arda Güler also tested Jan Oblak as the opening 45 minutes produced limited chances.
The match changed dramatically four minutes after the restart.
Giuliano Simeone was brought down by Dean Huijsen inside the penalty area, with the Real defender initially shown a yellow card. Following a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a red, leaving Real with 10 men.
Grimaldo made no mistake from the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute, sending Courtois the wrong way to give Atlético the lead.
Real responded with two substitutions, bringing on Rüdiger and Yan Diomande for Vinícius Júnior and Güler, but Atlético quickly doubled their advantage.
Jonathan David finished off a flowing move in the 59th minute after Kang-In Lee found Giuliano Simeone, who squared the ball into the Canadian’s path. David timed his run perfectly before sliding his effort beyond Courtois.
Atlético then came close to adding a third, with Courtois producing a superb save before Ibrahima Konaté made a goal-line intervention to keep Real in the contest.
Real continued to push despite being a man down and were rewarded in the 89th minute when Rüdiger headed home from Bernardo Silva’s free-kick.
The late goal gave Real renewed hope, but Atlético held firm through six minutes of added time to secure the derby victory.
Real manager Jose Mourinho praised his players’ effort after the match but expressed strong criticism of the refereeing decisions, particularly Huijsen’s dismissal and the officials involved in the VAR process.
Atlético’s victory moves them above Real in the standings, while Barcelona retain their position at the top.
