Newly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev has named Jannik Sinner as the best player in the world, despite winning two Grand Slam titles this season.
Zverev made the admission after defeating American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the US Open final at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, September 13. The victory secured Zverev’s second Grand Slam title of 2026, following his French Open triumph in June.
His US Open triumph ended a six-year wait for the title after he surrendered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem in the 2020 final.
Despite his own success, the German pointed to world No. 1 Sinner when asked to identify the best player in men’s tennis.
“I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.”
“With Jannik Sinner being injured and Carlos Alcaraz coming back from injury after four months, right now this moment, probably yes. Both of them healthy and both of them at the top of their game, maybe not.”
“If everyone is healthy, I think Jannik is still ahead. It’s as simple as that” Zverev said.
