American Tennis player Ben Shelton has described both his successes and failures as a “gift” after falling short in the 2026 US Open final.
Shelton missed out on his first Grand Slam title after losing 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 to Germany’s Alexander Zverev at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, September 13.
Zverev’s victory secured his second Grand Slam title of the year after his French Open triumph, capping an impressive 2026 season.
Shelton had been aiming to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win a Grand Slam singles title. Despite the disappointment, the 23-year-old remained positive about his progress and the lessons from his journey.
“It’s such a cool moment. Walking out on that court today, there’s nothing like it. I’ve never felt anything like that before. Yeah, it’s an addicting feeling being in positions like this.”
“My successes are a gift, the failures are a gift, and being here playing in front of you guys is a gift. I don’t think I’m anywhere near the player that I want to be” Shelton said.
