The Minority in Parliament is calling for the immediate dismissal or suspension of National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah over alleged irregularities surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority says the NSA Director-General and some staff have been reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning over about US$600,000 allegedly generated through the arrangement. According to the caucus, the scheme was operated by a private entity with support from the NSA.
Addressing journalists, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said Ampofo Ankrah should step aside pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Minority alleges that some individuals were charged as much as US$8,000 for assistance with travel arrangements, with promotional materials for the service displayed at NSA offices and around the stadium.
Assafuah said the caucus was also concerned about the approximately US$600,000 reportedly generated through the arrangement.
“We therefore call on the President to dismiss the Director-General of the National Sports Authority with immediate effect, or, at the very least, require him to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation,” he said.
The NSA in a statement has denied authorising any visa facilitation or money collection arrangement and says it will cooperate with any lawful police investigation.
The Minority has also raised questions about the travel of the driver and secretary of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alleging that the two have yet to return to Ghana.
