Javier Aguirre has been appointed head coach of Spanish La Liga side Valencia after leading Mexico to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 67-year-old Argentine has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for another season. Aguirre returns to La Liga for his seventh head coaching role in the competition, having previously managed Leganés, Osasuna and Atlético Madrid.
He takes over from Carlos Corberán, who was dismissed after Valencia lost five of their opening seven league games this season.
Valencia finished ninth in the 2025-26 La Liga season but have endured a difficult start to the new campaign. At the World Cup, Aguirre guided co-hosts Mexico to the last 16, where they lost 3-2 to England.
“We’re going to play Racing Santander [on October 11] and we’re going to go for the win. The victory is what is needed. The plan is to win, and for the team to have a style and an identity. The fans will gradually get on board as the wins start coming” Aguirre said.
