England winger Anthony Gordon believes the Three Lions must stick to their own style rather than try to replicate Spain’s approach.
Gordon made the comments ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League clash against Spain on Saturday, September 26. The match is the first of four fixtures for England during the international window, with Thomas Tuchel’s side preparing for a stern test against the reigning world champions.
Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle United in the summer, says England must have confidence in their own identity when they face Spain.
The winger believes trying to copy Spain’s possession-based style would be counterproductive and has urged England to focus on the qualities that make them effective.
“[The] scar-of losing the 2026 World Cup semifinal game- doesn’t have to be a negative one because it might lead us to victory in the next tournaments.”
“We can’t keep looking at other countries and trying to be like them, because we’re not them – we’re English and we have our own strengths.”
“I’m in Spain, I know we have just as good players, but they have different qualities, so why are you trying to make those players the same as the Spanish players? Because the Spanish players lack the things that we have and vice versa” Gordon said.
