U-turn: NSA withdraws new charges on Accra Sports Stadium use

The National Sports Authority has withdrawn proposed new charges for use of the Accra Sports Stadium for Ghana Premier League matches.

In a letter signed by the Director General of the NSA, Prof. Peter Twumasi, the NSA said the withdrawal of the proposal became necessary following consultation with the Sports Minister and the affected clubs.

On Tuesday October 20, the NSA wrote to the Ghana Football Association informing them of new levies for clubs wishing to use the Accra Sports Stadium for league matches for the 2020/2021 season.

In the statement, the NSA said matches involving Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak against any other Ghana Premier League opponents will attract a flat fee of Ghs 20,000 as stadium user fee while all other matches not including Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, will attract a Ghs 15,000 fee.

President of he Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, described the new charges as  “exorbitant and unfortunate” and called for an immediate review.

On Wednesday, the GFA and the affected clubs engaged the NSA in a meeting to air their misgivings about the new figures.

The NSA subsequently backtracked on its earlier decision and will now revert to the old arrangement for sharing revenues accrued on match days which allocates 10% of the gross proceeds to the NSA, custodians of the Accra Sports Stadium.
