Missing out on 2006 and 2010 World Cup still hurts – Laryea Kingston

Former Black Stars midfielder, Laryea Kingston, has revealed that it has been difficult getting over the hurt of not playing for Ghana at the World Cup.

The 41-year-old was left out of Ghana’s squads for both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, despite being heavily involved in the qualification process for both tournaments.

Kingston missed out on the 2006 World Cup because he was suspended after picking up a red card at the 2006 AFCON and was dropped by then Head Coach, Milovan Rajevac, from the final squad list for the tournament in South Africa, despite making the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup.

“Not going to the World Cup, 2006, 2010 for me is still a tough moment me when I think about it or when I start talking about it,” Laryea Kingston told Radio Gold Talk Sports in an interview.

“Because in 2006, I played every game, every qualifier, every friendly game, every game throughout the 2006 qualification, I was part of it but I couldn’t make it.

“In 2010, it was the same, I played every single game so last game to go to the World Cup, I was asked to go home.”

Kingston, years after calling time on his career, is now hoping to return to the big stage as a coach one day.

“I know I did not go to the World Cup as a player but I believe deep in my heart that I will be in the World Cup as a coach one day.

Kingston made 41 appearances for Ghana between 2002 and 2010, scoring six goals.
