Next Black Stars head coach must be ‘strict’ and not take orders – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan commented on the currently vacant Black Stars head coach role, calling for the appointment of a coach that is strict.

The senior national men’s team has been without a coach since December last year after the team’s group stage exit from the World Cup in Qatar which prompted the exit of Otto Addo.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently looking for a new coach, with over a large number of applications received, according to the Association’s Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer, is of the view that whoever assumes the role should be a disciplinarian who will instill good values into the team.

“We need an experienced coach, someone with strong credentials. Even if he is an inexperienced coach, we should be able to identify what the coach has taught the players in terms of their style of play,” he said, speaking to Dan Kweku Yaw in a YouTube interview.

“You can take an inexperienced coach but make sure he understands the game. Get someone who will make the people understand his philosophy.”

“[Find] someone who can take charge, not someone who takes orders. You have to be strict and take charge of what you are doing,” Gyan added.

The GFA is expected to name a new head coach before the African Cup of Nations qualifiers kick off in March this year.
