Performance Based Contracts for Junior Nat’l Team Coaches breeds corruption – Oti Akenteng

On Day Three of a Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism, veteran coach Francis Oti Akenteng, called for the end of performance based contracts for coaches of Ghana’s National Football Teams.

His concerns comes on the back of Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, chastising coaches of Ghana’s Junior National Team for complaining about unpaid salaries despite agreeing to sign performance based contracts. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

Honourable Ussif made this known when he appeared before the Committee on Day One of the hearing where he shed some light on how Ghana’s contingent at the 2023 AFCON spent three million dollars despite crashing out at the group stage. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

Oti Akenteng disagreed with this assertion in his address where he also touched on his concerns over the high remuneration for members of the Black Stars Management Committee. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

According to Oti Akenteng, who has served as Technical Director for the Ghana Football Association in his career, using performance based contracts at the junior level promotes age cheating.

“It’s something that we need to take it out seriously. Coaches of the junior national teams…they’ve been picking senior players. If let’s say we are playing Under 17, they will take about (players aged) 20, 21, 22 because if they take the actual age to the tournament and they lost, that probably will be their end and that also brought a lot of corruption.”

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif
