Black Stars Management Committee concept is outdated and flawed – Jerome Otchere

Sports Analyst Jerome Otchere has strongly opposed the concept of a Black Stars Management Committee, describing it as outdated and inconsistent with modern football administration.

His comments follow the GFA’s recent reconstitution of the Black Stars Management Committee, which includes the appointment of a former Black Stars captain as Vice Chairman, tasked with player relations.

Otchere argues that the committee’s past members have failed to achieve any significant success with the team in recent years, reinforcing his position that the committee should be abolished.

Jerome Otchere, Sports Analyst

He said this in an interview with Citi Sports on Monday, January 20, 2025.

I think the whole idea and the whole reconstitution of the committee is akin or can be likened to the saying by Jesus in the Bible that if you put new wine in old wine skin eventually because the wine skin is weak, it’s old, it will vest, it will tear away. And I mean it will be worked down zero.

That’s how I see what the GFA has done. It is not about the personality, it’s about the concept of having management committees and in particular case that of the Black stars.

Having to reconstitute it for the third time. Don’t forget, when Kurt came into office in 2019, there was an arrangement from the Normalisation Committee, but I mean, he formed a committee at that time.

When we went to the AFCON in 2021, it didn’t work.

There was pressure on them to sack the coach.

The coach was sacked.

There was pressure on them to scrap the management committee.

Eventually, they…bowed to that pressure and changed the committee.

So we had another one. And after the Afcon 2023, the same thing happened.

The coach was removed.

We had to reconstitute the Black Stars Management Committee. So in my view, the concept is wrong. It is not in tandem with modern trends of running the game, more so a national team.

The Black Stars Management Committee has been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the team’s administrative and logistical operations.

It will be chaired by Dr. Randy Abbey, a member of the GFA Executive Council.

As Chairman, Dr. Abbey will also lead engagements with the Government and other key stakeholders. Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has been appointed as Vice Chairman, tasked with supporting Dr. Abbey and focusing on player relations.

The committee’s immediate priority is to support Coach Otto Addo in securing victories in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, scheduled for March 2025.
